Gala Apples

Choose a fruit:

The Royal Gala Apple's signature is its pinkish-orange stripes over a yellow background. This crisp, aromatically sweet, snappy apple is regarded as one of the tastiest apples available today. Introduced to market in 1965 in New Zealand, the Royal Gala strain was named in honor of Queen Elizabeth II, who deemed it her favorite during a visit to New Zealand.

Galas have gained popularity among consumers in the past 15 years and are ideal for snacking. Gala is a cross of Cox's orange pippin and Golden Delicious developed by New Zealand plant breeders. Gala is one of the fairly recent introductions, sometimes called "gourmet apples", that are specifically aimed at the segment of the public that has been demanding better flavor in store-bought apples.

Gala, along with Fuji, Braeburn, Mutsu, and Pink Lady, gives the supermarket shopper a little more flavor and variety than in the past. U.S.-grown Galas are harvested beginning in mid-July, and are typically available year-round.
